Tai Pei Buddhist Centre - Introduction

Tai Pei Buddhist Centre is situated at the junction of Kallang Road and Lavender Street, also commonly known as Gas works. This site was originally the premise of Kwang Fu Primary School which had a history of over 70 years.

In 1985, Tai Pei Foundation assumed ownership and named it Tai Pei Buddhist Centre. It serves to propagate the Buddha's Teachings and educate the general public.

For the past 12 years since 1990, Tai Pei Buddhist Centre has been propagating Dharma teachings, guiding our Buddhist youth, to interact with care for one another and to share their experiences in learning Buddhism.

In 1992, Tai Pei Foundation started the Tai Pei Child Care Centre on the Second Floor of Tai Pei Buddhist Centre. It is a non-profitable organization which has the objective of actualizing a set of management systems to provide a child care service that is suitable to the needs of our children. This centre is open to all children regardless of race, religion and language.

The Centre was officiated on 14 May 1994 by the then Minister for Labour and Second Minister for Defense, Dr. Lee Boon Yang.

As time passed, the deterioration of the physical structure due to the wear and tear have resulted in our then simple Centre no longer being capable of performing its function effectively. Hence, the President of Tai Pei Foundation, Ven. Fatt Kuan, aspired to rebuild the Centre in accordance with the city redevelopment plan, in the hope to better shoulder the responsibility of spreading the wisdom of Buddha and propagating the Dharma for the benefit of all.

In 1996, Ven. Fatt Kuan started to plan for the rebuilding of Tai Pei Buddhist Centre as she felt that the dilapidated building could no longer serve its purpose. With the assistance of people from all walks of life, the Rebuilding Committee of Tai Pei Buddhist Centre finished its rebuilding plan in 1998 and conducted a Ground Breaking Ceremony on 21st August in the same year.

However, the cost of construction was enormous and far exceeded the budget of the Rebuilding Committee. Through the kind effort of Mr. Lee Bock Guan and Madam Tan Bao Hai, a Fund-Raising Charity Fair was organized in aid of the rebuilding on 31st May 1998, with the assistance of many devotees and generously supported by members of the public. From 24th May to 31st May, items like calligraphies, potteries, antiques, furniture and art pieces, which were donated by devotees, were put on sale to raise funds. Other activities, which included a"Thousand-People Charity Dinner" held on 26th December was also carried out.
